About Agapanthus Africanus - Elaine
Elaine or Lady Elaine Agapanthus are medium sized clumping lilies that are native to Africa. They have wide strap leaves and bloom in a 8" to 10" spike known as an umbel that stand tall above the plant.
Agapanthus 'Elaine' is an excellent plant for filler in mixed beds or as a border. They are salt tolerant and quite drought tolerant once well established.
The bloom is long lasting and good for cut flowers. This cultivar is also well suited for potted culture.
This particular cultivar is a hybridized cross introduced by Archie Armate from Huntington Beach, California in 1978. It is a very vigorous fast growing type that is quick to provide cover and foliage.
It blooms slightly later than the common Lavender Lily of the Nile with pom poms of clustered flower heads waving above the body of the lily in brilliant tones of sapphire, dark violet and navy blue, and has a more compact habit.
Agapanthus 'Elaine' is evergreen in Zone 9-10 and will generally resprout from the rhizomes in Zones 7 & 8, but should not be set out until the danger of severe frost and freeze has passed in the colder Zones.
All parts of the Agapanthus are considered toxic.
For the best results with Agapanthus 'Elaine':
- Plant in well draining, fertile soil.
- Locate in the full sun or dappled shade.
- Feed a good quality slow release bloom boosting plant food twice yearly
- Protect from frost and freeze through the first season.
