About Oliver Loquat - Japanese Plum:
Loquats are rounded, spreading evergreen trees, with large rough textured deep green leaves that have a rusty copper colored underside. It is a small statured, fast growing tree which lends itself well to urban, small lot, and street applications.
Loquat produces small white to cream colored, lightly fragrant flowers in the late summer and fall that are followed by small, golden, thin skinned, fleshy edible fruit that has a sweet, melon like flavor. The fruit can be eaten fresh, cooked or made into jelly.
These make great small shade trees, and are fine for ocean side plantings, as they are salt tolerant. Loquats are vigorous, easy to grow trees, that require little care or maintenance.
The Oliver Loquat is an older cultivar that is particularly well suited for Florida.
For the best results:
- Plant early in the season
- Plant in fertilze, well draining soil
- Provide supplemental irrigation until well established
- Prune lightly and often when young
- Feed a good quality slow release plant food 2 x yearly
